Sa
Founded in the 9th century, this prosperous province of the Dvaravati
period has played an important role in wars with Burma acting as a
buffer for Ayutthaya. King Naresuan fought a famous battle on
elephant back here, defeating a Burmese king. The main city has
moved back and forth across the Ta Chin River throughout its long
history. Today it is startlingly clean and different from most country
towns, with broad avenues and beautiful gardens, courtesy of a recent
prime minister whose home is here. There are a number of fine old
temples of the U-Thong period to be seen, as well as a rare wooden
Buddha footprint. |
