      S

Trat is the last outpost on the east coast as Sukhumvit Highway runs
into the Banthat mountains that demarcate the border with Cambodia.
Its fortunes see-sawed a century ago, when it was given to France in
return for Chanthaburi, only to be returned to the Thai fold on March
23, 1906, a date celebrated annually as Trat Memorial Day.

Like neighbouring Chanthaburi, Trat has rich resources, including
gem mines and market at Bo Rai, forests, and abundant fruit, such as
durian, zalacca, pineapple, rambutan. It is now making a name for
itself among adventure tourists, who are lured in droves by the natural
beauty and tranquility of Chang (elephant) Island and the nearby
islands that make up this marine national park.
