   Samur

A province with an ancient civilisation, evidence of which can be seen
at the Pha Taem and Pha Mon cliffs overlooking the Mekong River,
where prehistoric cave paintings date back 3,000 years. The
architecture around the town reflects an influence of Laos and
Cambodia, such as at Wat Thung Si Muang. Wat Nong Pa Pong is
renowned as the forest retreat or revered monk Acharn Cha, who built
the temple opposite, Wat Pa Nanachart as a centre for foreign monks
to study meditation. The Candle Festival held at the beginning of
Buddhist Lent in July is very special.
